Pot-bellied Pigs
A Truly Different Pet

The Pot-bellied pig has lost the popularity that they had in the end of last century, yet there are still many pot-bellied fans out there. There are a large group of vaccines used in domestic pigs. While all of these may be used safely in pot-bellied pigs, most of them are not necessary with pot-bellied pigs kept as pets. We typically vaccinate pot-bellied pigs for leptospirosis, a disease that affects the kidneys and may be transmitted to man  or other animals.

If you live in Joplin, the city has several additional reqirements that arelisted below.

  1. Must have documentation of the pig truly being a pot-bellied pig. This may be in the form of papers from a pot-bellied pig registry or a statement from a veterinarian that this is a pot-bellied pig.

  2. Tested and negative for Pseudorabies.

  3. Tested and negative for Brucellosis.

  4. City license.

These Jannuary 1, 2009 requirements are subject to change by the City of Joplin.
